This week in our Holy Spirit series, we focus on the Spirit of God as the source of all life. In John 6:63, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the one who gives life. The leaders of the early church latched on to that phrase as they attempted to understand the Trinity—one God, three Persons. Eventually the Nicene Creed declared faith in “the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life.”

Our Upbeat Music and Drama camp for students entering 3rd though 8th grades starts Monday, June 17, and runs through Friday, June 21. And our group headed out on the Living Water trip to Guatemala from June 22 to 29 is extremely excited about that adventure and how they can serve the people in Guatemala.

Volunteers are always needed to help teach English to refugees as they resettle with help from Lutheran Family Services (LFS). These are the summer volunteers at their training yesterday. They would love for you to pray for them as they finalize their lessons and begin to meet their students next week. Susan Staver, ESL Volunteer coordinator for First Pres, shares about her experience working with refugees and Lutheran Family Services. You can learn more about the many refugees who have resettled here at the World Refugee Day celebration hosted by LFS at Saint Luke's Lutheran Church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, June 15.
Just as we see Christ meeting tangible needs as well as spiritual needs, we partner with organizations both locally and globally who share this vision of holistic gospel ministry. This month we are highlighting our work together with Lutheran Family Services to extend God's hospitality toward those resettling in the U.S. as refugees. The Bible encourages God’s people to welcome “sojourners” or internationals living among us (Ex. 22:21, Lev. 19:34, Deut. 10:19, etc.) including those who have been uprooted by persecution and violence. Two of the tangible ways First Pres assists Lutheran Family Services is by hosting English-as-a-Second-Language classes (ESL) and offering nursery care for their children so they can attend those classes.
